Kyle Mosher is a full-time artist from Canada newly residing in Charlotte, NC. He is inspired by a range of artists including: Picasso, Braque, Rauschenberg, Johns, Cezanne, Eduardo Recife (Misprinted Type) and the Dadaism movement. Mosher tries to merge the “superficial” world of pop-art with the classic-but-sometimes-stale traditional world of fine art. Mosher's signature art style brings together a mix of wet and dry media to create collage/cut-paper art and illustrations in both analog and digital mediums. He has gathered a large collection of old magazines, newspapers, and books, and attempts to use every last piece of paper in his work. Much of the source material dates back to the early 1900s, donated to him by a former Harvard archivist. Mosher hand selects pieces from his collection in order to comprise a backdrop that is not only rich in texture, but is also cohesive with the theme of the painting.
When asked by Ellen Gurley of, "My City Magazine" why he featured so many mainstream pop/rap stars in his portraits, Mosher responds, "because I dig the rags to riches story. It is possible. I'm a big advocate for encouraging people to follow their dreams. I think it's beautiful when one overcomes adversity, dreams big, and achieves success. I genuinely mean that. I like motivating and inspiring people with my actions and my words. I like showing them that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. It was never encouraged for me to pursue art. In fact, at one point, it was frowned upon. But I left everything I knew and was comfortable with (Hockey, a Liberal Arts business degree) to follow my dreams. A lot of people thought I was crazy, but I had this vision / where I wanted to be and WHAT I wanted to be, so I chased it. So when thinking of subjects for my portraits I look for those who have a story to tell to which I can relate. I like to encourage people to ‘go for it‘ (no matter what your ‘it‘ is).” Everyday he sets out to create unique artwork that has a distinct style while staying true to both his artistic morals and himself.
